Drinking Water Quality
Drinking water guidelines
The world health organisation (WHO) sets guidelines, and many Governments
have set their own standards stipulating the criteria for drinking
water quality, that is:

| · |
elements which should be contained in drinking water, such
as minerals like Calcium, Magnesium etc. |
| · |
contaminants, which have to be removed or reduced to the maximum
allowable concentration level. |

There are two main groups covering health criteria:

| · |
the bacteriological quality of drinking water, still being
the major disease causing problem |
| · |
the chemicals of health significance in drinking water, subdivided
into the following categories: Inorganic constituents, organic
constituents, pesticides, disinfectants and disinfectant by-products. |

Furthermore the guideline deals with substances and parameters in
drinking water that may give rise to complaints, the aesthetic aspects:
appearance, odour and taste.
