Treatment methods

The most common methods for domestic water treatment at the point of use are:

· Micro-/Ultrafiltration - compact systems incorporating 2 - 4 stages of filtration; high performance at reasonable cost
· Reverse Osmosis - usually makes only sense for unacceptably high levels of dissolved inorganic contaminants.
· Distillation - produces pure water, takes time, space, uses electricity, not convenient
· UV systems - effective only for bacteriological treatment, heats up water
· Water softeners - Hard water contains high concentrations of magnesium and calcium whereas the principal mineral of soft water is sodium.
· Pitcher filters - designed to improve taste & odour, convenient only for limited amounts of water per day
· Sediment and activated carbon filters - improve appearance, taste and odour.
